Likes don't pay invoices: measure social media by enquiries

By the CyberSphere Marketing team · 8 October 2026 · 4 min read

A post can collect thousands of likes and bring in no work at all. Likes feel good, and they show that people noticed something, but they do not pay invoices. If you want social media to grow the business, you have to measure it by what it brings in: enquiries.

Why vanity metrics mislead

Likes, reach and follower counts measure attention, not intent. A funny meme can out-perform a clear service post ten to one, and still send nobody to your contact form. When attention is the only thing you track, you end up making more of what is popular rather than more of what is profitable.

What to track instead

  • Enquiries: form submissions, direct messages asking about your services, calls and emails.
  • Cost per enquiry: total spend (time and ad budget) divided by enquiries received.
  • Enquiry-to-customer rate: how many enquiries turn into paying work.
  • Source: which channel, post or campaign each enquiry came from.

How to set it up

You do not need expensive software to start. Give each channel its own route in: a tracked link for each profile, a "how did you hear about us?" question on your contact form, and a dedicated booking link for ads. Then log every enquiry in a simple spreadsheet with the date, source and outcome. Review it once a month.

What to do with the numbers

Once you can see which content and channels produce enquiries, the decisions get easier. Do more of what works, fix the places where interest drops off, and stop spending time on formats that get applause but no work. That is the difference between being busy on social media and growing because of it.

Takeaway: ask of every post and every ad, "did this bring us a conversation?" Likes are a nice side effect, and enquiries are the goal.
